Tirzepatide – Dual GIP/GLP-1 Receptor Agonist
Tirzepatide is a synthetically produced peptide that simultaneously activates the receptors of the two naturally occurring incretin hormones GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). Through this dual mechanism of action, tirzepatide influences glucose metabolism as well as appetite, satiety, and body weight.
Mechanism of Action
After food intake, GIP and GLP-1 are naturally released in the intestine. Tirzepatide mimics the effects of these hormones and activates their receptors, including those in the pancreas and brain.
